Deworming is a standard protocol for pets that is most commonly performed on puppies and kittens. Newborn puppies and kittens are generally given deworming medications starting at 2 weeks of age; this continues every 2 weeks following, until the animal is 6 months of age. However, parasites can be present in or on animals of any age, therefore deworming procedures are an important part of maintaining your pet’s overall wellbeing. Because some parasites are zoonotic – meaning they can be transferred from animal to human – the prevention of parasites is also beneficial to the people your pet may interact with.
Dewormers can be administered orally or topically, depending on the active ingredient and what parasite(s) they are designed to treat. As with all medications, there are risks if deworming agents are administered improperly or if the dosage is too high for your pet. Because of this, it is important to consult with veterinary professionals to ensure that your pet is effectively treated with no complications. Our hospital has a variety of dewormers on hand, and we provide treatment for dogs and cats of all ages. A wellness exam will need to be performed to determine which medications are appropriate for your pet.
If you suspect a parasitic infection in your pet, please call us as soon as possible for further information. We have a variety of diagnostic tools available, such as radiographs and fecal examinations, to accurately determine if your pet is suffering from any sort of parasite. These infections can be painful, lethal if left untreated, and can pose a high risk to not only your pet, but your home and its inhabitants as well.
