Spays and neuters are both common surgical procedures that we offer here at our hospital. For dogs, we recommend getting them spayed or neutered at 6 to 9 months of age, depending on their size and breed. For cats, we recommend getting them spayed or neutered at about 6 months of age. At these ages, the procedure is quicker and recovery will be easier for your pet.
The main benefit of these procedures is the prevention of some cancers such as uterine and testicular cancer, as well as preventing accidental litters if your pet roams or escapes.
Male dogs are less likely to roam away from home after being neutered, and both male dogs and cats may show positive behavioral changes, such as less frequent marking of territories with urine.
